GBE 2.1 - Expectations

Expectation/ekspekˈtāSHən/Noun

"In the case of uncertainty, expectation is what is considered the most likely to happen. An expectation, which is a belief that is centered on the future, may or may not be realistic. A less advantageous result gives rise to the emotion of disappointment. If something happens that is not at all expected it is a surprise. An expectation about the behavior or performance of another person, expressed to that person, may have the nature of a strong request, or an order." [1]

I used to have expectations... of myself, of family, of friends, of co-workers. I have learned (the hard way) that you can't have them of other people. I keep them for myself as motivation to learn and grow. Continue and read what some other people have said about expectations.

Would have liked a lot more from you, rather than other people's words. A nice blog though.

Well, you made clear what everyone else said about expectations, which was interesting, but the whole point was what your take on expectations is. I guess I never figured that out reading your blog.

I don't know--I think even though practically everyone is trying to say they have low or no expectaions, that's more a wannabe thought than actual truth. I really realize now more than ever after this topic that I'm nowhere near close to zen-like enough for no expectations. lol! ;-) And, I don't think very many are.

Lindsey Buckingham's and Orison Swett Marden's are my faves. Both elicited different reactions from me. Both of which were honest ones and unexpected. ;)

You know...I think there is at least one quote here most of us can relate to and for each of us it is probably a different one. Awesome way to pull it all together.

For me, I loved Ralph Marston's quote on Expectations "Don't lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality."

To that I can totally relate!!

Great blog...thanks for sharing!

Cheers, Jenn

Don't agree with you on not getting attached to people, because I think that attachments are what make life worth living, the good and the bad that come out of them, but ...

completely agree that you can only control what you expect of yourself. Sort of along the lines that only you can control your reaction.
