The Assignment from BellaDonna

My new friend BellaDonna challenged me in her comment regarding my blog The Power of Words. Maybe challenged is a little strong. Always the professor, this is what she said:

Words are powerful because they have the ability to create or to destroy.

Think about that. What examples spring to mind?

Here's a prompt: Write a poem (or piece of prose) on the creative -- or destructive -- potential in words, using specific examples.

Well, here goes:

The teenage boy sat in the back of the classroom. He was three months into seventh grade and things were so different at this new school. Always before, in elementary school, he had been the class clown; the outgoing one. Now, in this new environment, he found himself the target of abuse. Verbal and physical abuse.

Here he comes. It's fat boy.

Look at his clothes.

You're ugly.

Photobucket

Taunts all day long. His books would disappear, only to be found hidden away.

Homework would be stolen, then grudgingly returned.

The outgoing little boy was disappearing, and a shy, introverted young man was taking his place.

Sometimes, that class clown would come out. The cheerleader made the class clown come out; the boy liked the cheerleader. So one day between classes, at her locker, the class clown asked her to go to a dance. After she got over the shock, what came next was not words, but laughter. Her friends joined in with her. The laughter cut just like well used words can cut. After that, the clown followed the advice of the Beatles. He hid his love away.

The teenage boy grew up to be a man. A quiet man. He became friends by graduation with all that originally bullied him. Even the cheerleader, who actually apologized.

He lives a quiet but happy life now. Most of the time. I see him every morning.

Photobucket

How do I know all this?

The teenage boy was me.

A repost from 12/08/2007 ~ Thoughts and musings on the Power of Words

I added some. It is in red

Sometimes I think
that we don't know, or we forget, the power of those little things we string together to form sentences. They can bring a smile to someone's face or a tear to their eye. Also, what isn't said can sometimes be just as powerful; mainly hurtful. The forgotten "I Love You" all the way down to saying nothing at all.

What really sucks is when you say something and it is
misunderstood. When I say something, it is only meant in a good way. When I offer advice, albeit unsolicited, it is not in a malicious manner. You can mean well and .....

SONG TIME!!!

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good. Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.

QUOTE TIME!!!

Henry Brooks Adams said

"No man means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous."

What got me started thinking on this? It was lyrics I heard from the song "Sing For The Moment" by Eminem.

"Yet everybody just feels like they can relate, I guess words are a mothafucka they can be great. Or they can degrate, or even worse they can teach hate''

Surprisingly profound. *note "degrade" was intentionally misspelled to rhyme*

What got me re-thinking about the power of words? Things. Mainly, I posted a blog last night, which after some thought I deleted. It sounded cryptic, which was not my intention at all. Words can bring you up or down for sure. Certain words can bring you down even further. Take my word for it.

How powerful do you think words are?

No Title Needed

Don't go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore

I could not leave you in times of trouble
We never would have come this far
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are

Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care

I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are.

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.

I said I love you and that's forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are.

I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are.

GBE 71 - Simple Pleasures

Photobucket

The subject this week is "Simple Pleasures." Here are some that I thought of over the past couple days, plus some I've heard over the years.

Receiving an unexpected compliment.

Helping someone in need.

Making someone smile.

Daydreaming

Finding money you didn’t know you had.

Receiving a real letter or package via snail mail.

Making the yellow light.

Hearing the right song at the right moment.

Catching a glimpse of bare skin on the opposite sex.

People watching.

A beautiful view.

Relaxing outdoors on a sunny day.

Listening to good music.

Taking a long, relaxing shower.

A good novel.

The smell of fresh-cut grass.

The smell of the earth.

Watching the sunrise.

Watching the sunset.

Walking on the beach.

Laughing till your sides hurt.

A long conversation with a good friend.

Being lazy on a Sunday.

An uncluttered room.

Fries and a milkshake.

Singing in the shower.

Fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies.

Homemade pie.

Laying back and watching the stars.

Laying back and looking up at clouds.

Watching a lightning storm.

Reese’s peanut butter cups.

PB&J sandwich.

Seeing your savings account grow.

Watching your debt shrink.

A gentle breeze.

Checking something off your to-do list.

A clear desk.

Watching animals in nature.

An empty email inbox.

GBE-69 - I Resolve To...

I haven't really resolved to do anything. After some soul searching at Christmas, I decided that I don't need to change myself to be liked. I will be me, I will not conform. You know me and quotes. One that came to mind was "To thine own self, be true." - Shakespeare (Hamlet) inspired by Socrates (Know Thyself). I have always loved that quote, but it was not something I aspired to do. Now it is. I am who I am.

Right now, I am smiling.

Here are a few other quotes. Then, enjoy this video. Great song and more great quotes. :D

"Conform and be dull." ~ James Frank Dobie

"I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people." ~ John Lennon

"The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself." ~ Rita Mae Brown

I wish everyone Peace, Love and Happiness as we move on into 2009. ~ Kevin

Blast from the past.- Strap in, shut-up, and hold on. We’re going back.

When I saw this, I just had to repost it.

This was

originally posted by Johnny Virgil on 10/12/07 on the blogsite
15 Minute Lunch.

--------------------------------------------------

Last weekend I put an exhaust fan in the ceiling for my wife's grandfather. After a bunch of hours spent in The Hottest Attic In The Universe, he had a ceiling fan that ducted to the side of his house.

While my brother-in-law and I were fitting the fan in between the joists, we found something under the insulation. What we found was this:

A JC Penney catalog from 1977. It's not often blog fodder just falls in my lap, but holy hell this was two solid inches of it, right there for the taking. I thumbed through it quickly and found my next dining room set, which is apparently made by adding upholstery to old barrels:

Also, I am totally getting this for my bathroom, because obviously nothing absorbs errant pee like a nice, thick shag:

There's plenty more home furnishings where those came from, however I'm not going to bore you with that. Instead, I'm going to bore you with something else. The clothes.

The clothes are fantastic. Imagine if you wore them today.

Here's how to get your ass kicked in elementary school:

Just look at that belt. It's like a boob-job for your pants. He probably needed help just to lift it into place. The belt loops have to be three inches long, for god's sake. And way to pull your pants up to your armpits, grandpa.

Here's how to get your ass kicked in high school:

This kid looks like he's pretending to be David Soul, who is pretending to be a cop who is pretending to be a pimp that everyone knows is really an undercover cop. Who is pretending to be 15.

Here's how to get your ass kicked on the golf course:

This "all purpose jumpsuit" is, according to the description, equally appropriate for playing golf or simply relaxing around the house. Personally, I can't see wearing this unless you happen to be relaxing around your cell in D-block. Even then, the only reason you should put this thing on is because the warden forced you to at gunpoint.

Here's how to get your ass kicked pretty much anywhere:

I'll bet these guys do ok with the ladies. If you look at that picture quickly, it looks like Mr. Bob "No-pants" Saget has his hand in the other guy's pocket. In this case, he doesn't, although you can tell just by looking at them that it's happened - or if it hasn't happened it will. Oh yes. It will. As soon as he puts down his color-coordinated coffee cup.

Here's how to get your ass kicked at the beach:

He looks like he's reaching for a gun, but you know it's probably just a bottle of suntan lotion in a holster.

How to get your ass kicked in a meeting:

If you wear this suit and don't sell used cars for a living, I believe you can be fined and face serious repercussions, up to and including termination. Or imprisonment, in which case you'd be forced to wear that orange jumpsuit; which, frankly, is a step up.

How to get your ass kicked on every day up to and including St. Patrick's Day

Dear god in heaven, I don't believe that color exists in nature. There is NO excuse for wearing either of these ensembles unless you're working as a body guard for the Lucky Charms leprechaun.

In this next one, Your Search For VALUE Ends at Penneys.

As does your search for chest hair.

And this -- Seriously. No words.

Oh wait, it turns out there are words after all, and those words are What. The. Fuck. I'm guessing the snap front gives you quick access to the chest hair. I think the little tie must be the pull tab. If you look closely, it says, "In case of chest hair emergency, pull tab quickly and back away."

Also, judging by the sheer amount of matching his/hers outfits, in 1977 it was apparently considered pretty stylish for couples to dress alike. These couples look happy, don't they?

I am especially fond of this one, which I have entitled "Cowboy Chachi Loves You Best."

And nothing showcases your everlasting love more than the commitment of matching bathing suits. That, and an appreciative blonde with a look on her face that says "I love the way your junk fights against that fabric."

Then, after the lovin', you can relax in your one-piece matching terry cloth jumpsuits:

I could go on, but I'm tired, and my eyes hurt from this trip back in time. I think it's the colors. I will leave you with these tasteful little numbers:

Man, that's sexy.

GBE 68 - My Christmas, and my guilty pleasure. (one of them)

My Christmas day was a quiet one, spending time with my mom (my only family), relaxing and spending time online, especially youtube. I evaluated my life so far and I am thankful for all the blessings in my life. I really tried to remember what Christmas was all about.

I came across this one song (kinda got stuck on Lita), and was immediately reminded of a friend. I listened, going from one video to another. You think that youtube is not addicting? I was on there for hours, thanks to those "Related Videos".

So, revealed is my guilty pleasure. I am putting on some of the videos I enjoyed. Thank goodness for music. It was there, as it always is, to bring me out of my funk. I hope you enjoy them and I wish you ALL the best.

When you watch the last video, let us all hope that things will be better in 2009.

Peace ~ Kevin

Lonely People ~ This is for you... for me...for us.

Photobucket

Lately, I have been reading and hearing how friends of mine and people I don't even know are lonely; sad; heartbroken; played. This has caused me to take a long look at my life. Some would call it soul-searching.

I will admit that I feel lonely at times. I can be in the middle of a crowd and feel so alone. At times I do feel that life has passed me by. That I will never have the love of another. Yet I love myself. I enjoy my own company. Aren't you supposed to love yourself before you can love another?

This is a major step for me. For those of you who know me, you know I am not one to reveal my feelings. I try and keep them hidden deep inside me. I don't do the greatest;
*my heart is on my sleeve*
*my face reveals what I am thinking*
*my words I must, I have to choose carefully*

But I have decided to accept the fact that I MIGHT have to live my biggest fear. That fear? Being without anyone to love or be loved by. But now that I have accepted it, it really is no longer a fear. The weight is off me.

Does this mean I have given up?

Does this mean I will no longer try?

Does this mean I won't feel a tug at my heart when I see a happy smiling couple?

No, I definitely won't give up. No, I still will try. And yes, I will still feel that little tug. I am just not going to dwell on it. I will enjoy my own company for now, until I find someone who will enjoy it also and who I can share it with. Who I can love, and be loved in return. I know someone is out there. With my little quirks and idiosyncrasies, it will take quite a patient and caring woman. One thing I do have is patience.
Someday...

Please don't think I wrote this for comments saying "poor you". I wrote this for all of us; just a little bonus of me sharing me. :)
The following is for all who are feeling hurt. May you find whatever it is you are searching for.

Peace ~ Kevin

This is for all the lonely people
Thinking that life has passed them by
Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup
And ride that highway in the sky

This is for all the single people
Thinking that love has left them dry

Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup

You never know until you try

Well, I'm on my way

Yes, I'm back to stay

Well, I'm on my way back home (hit it)

This is for all the lonely people

Thinking that life has passed them by

Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup

And never take you down or never give you up

You never know until you try

GBE 67 - Alone

I saw the GBE subject this week and immediately thought of this song. Nothing else I can say, except from time to time, I've related to it. Especially the lines "Till now I always got by on my own, I never really cared until I met you." We all at one time or another feel alone. I love this song.

I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark
I wonder where you are tonight
No answer on the telephone
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though
Alone

CHORUS:
Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met you
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone

You don't know how long I have wanted
To touch your lips and hold you tight
You don't know how long I have waited
You don't know how long I have waited
And I was gonna tell you tonight
But the secret is still my own
And my love for you is still unknown
Alone

CHORUS

How do I get you alone
How do I get you alone
Alone, alone

Now, a bonus point round. Listen to "What About Love", also by Heart. Listen especially to the chorus, and try to guess who sings backup for Ann Wilson. Can you? Listen and hear.

GBE 66 - LOYALTY

This weeks subject is Loyalty. This is a characteristic that I find to be an admirable trait in people and one I feel I have.

Merriam-Webster's defines Loyalty as:

Form(s): plural loy·al·ties

Etymology: alteration of Middle English leawte, lewte, from Anglo-French lealté, leauté, from leal, leial loyal

"When we are debating an issue, loyalty means giving me your honest opinion, whether you think I'll like it or not. Disagreement, at this stage, stimulates me. But once a decision has been made, the debate ends. From that point on, loyalty means executing the decision as if it were your own." ~ Colin Powell (Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-93)
